For x.commerce innovate 2011 Hoccer teamed up with PayPal and Missionfish.org for showing Hoccer’s API abilities in a whole new way compared to what you saw on your phone so far. We coded a WebApp and a donation wall with which a charity (in our example it was the American Cancer Society) can collect donations for it’s cause. But how does this work?

The charity uses one or more large displays or projectors to show the donation wall (our example can be found here) which acts like a blackboard where all donations are shown to the audience of an event, a prom or similar. People who would like to donate use there smartphone to open a short URL (our example can be found here), the opened website shows a short form where the donor types in his name, an email address, a short comment and an amount. To send his donation the donor just makes a throw gesture with his phone (or taps a button in case the phone doesn’t support this) and the donation will be shown on the wall including the name, the comment and the amount the donor entered. To pay his donation the donor will receive an invoice using PayPal’s Invoice API

If you want to try our example just open the wall on your PC using a modern Browser (Chrome, Safari or Firefox) and open the WebApp on your phone. But remember: This is real! So please pay your donation . Also we put the code in a public github repository so if you want to use this for own charity feel free to use our example code. The backend was made by Ali Minaei from PayPal UK, thank you!

New features and possibilities

Hoccer just released Hoccer 2.2 for iOS. This update includes support for iOS 5 and also includes several new features including full video support, so now you can hocc videos without any hustle. Also this new version includes support for hoccering music out of your device’s iPod. For this Hoccer has to convert the selected song into a new format, this can take some time and also only DRM-free songs can be converted. Here is a quick list of what else has changed in Hoccer 2.2 for iOS:

Support for pasting content into Hoccer: Just select “Paste” in the “Select Content”-Menu or tap and hold in the middle of the Screen.

A nicer image viewer in the history: In allows you to pinch and zoom just like the Photos-App of your iPhone

A better data representation: Photos won’t be cropped and vCard Details will be shown on the card.

Fixed some crashes and issues

New graphics in the tutorial

If you have found any bugs or if you have a idea how to improve Hoccer on iPhone don’t hesitate to write my a note philip@hoccer.com

Good news everyone!

We revamped the Hoccer WebApp! First of all, we gave the WebApp a complete new design and user interface. We also made some changes on how you use the WebApp. You are now able to select your mobile device or even another WebApp which runs on the same location, so you are able to exchange content between two WebApps. We also added a mobile theme. So you can use Hoccer with people, who haven‘t installed Hoccer on their device yet. The mobile theme also supports Blackberrys. Last but not least, you can reach the WebApp now under hocc.it! It was never easier to exchange data!

We are always open to new suggestions to improve the user experience, so feel free to contact us!

Gute Nachrichten!

We have built in some new features with which you may already familiar from the latest version of our clients on smartphones. Because we implemented our newest functionality to the javascript-api you may now for example not only restrict your wall to the last sender but all clients in your area.

Feature list:

Naming the Wall - There is a new option in the settings-window available for giving your wall a custom name with which it can be seen and identified by all clients grouped with the wall. It is now possible to announce your wall to an audience by simply sharing the name with them. By that people can select your wall to directly send pictures to wall without disturbing clients nearby.

Client list and selected clients — As a new option you can view all the clients in your area by clicking on the new link above the well known settings-button. The number there you find will show you the number of all clients in your area if you do not select some or if selected the total number of selected clients. You now can restrict usage of the wall to a specific group of clients identified by their own name. This feature has also been implemented in all of our mobile clients and we are glad to make it available at HoccerWall for you today.

Coming with those new features there are some changes for the javascript-api as well. We implemented core functionality into the API such as the peek-method, which is designed to show all client grouped with your client. In addition for all our JavaScript-Developers it is now possible to name your WebApp, select clients in your group for restricted send and receive or to just delete your own client instantaneously for a clean closing. You can view those methods and how to use them in our javascript-api-documentation.

See how it works and feel the new usability now…

We’ve first previewed the upcoming Hoccer Wall at the Always-On Festival in Berlin:

As you can see, the Wall simply displays all images which are thrown at the current location. From now on everyone can use this localized zero-conf presentation tool by browsing to wall.hoccer.com. Because this Web App is such a great demonstration of using our Linccing Service, we published the code at GitHub.

We’ve got great feedback after the Always-On Festival: Radio SWR2 aired a german radio feature and the German TV broadcaster Alex Berlin recorded the whole event (to be aired at 9. March 2011, 20:15).

We have finally released Hoccer 2.0 for Android, iOS and the Web! The look and feel has not changed much but the new Linccer backend improves usability enormously: Handshaking two devices is ultra fast and file up– and download will happen at the same time as can be seen by the progress bars:

Our improved Web App focuses on one-to-one sharing simply with the dragging gesture. If your browser is able to provide location information, then desktop to mobile transfer is a matter of a single click:
